What
is this medicine for?
FIBRO-VEIN is a sclerosant — a medicine injected into unwanted veins to
close them off permanently. The chemical damages the inner lining of the vein,
causing it to close and gradually disappear over weeks to months. It is used to
treat:
• Spider veins and small thread veins
on the legs
• Reticular veins (slightly larger
bluish-green veins under the skin)
• Small varicose veins
What
happens during the procedure?
• You lie down or sit comfortably; the
skin is cleaned with an antiseptic
• A tiny amount (0.1–0.5 mL) is
injected into each target vein using a fine needle
• Multiple injections can be given in
one session
• Compression bandaging is applied
immediately after injection
• You will be asked to walk for 15–20
minutes straight after the procedure
• You must wear compression stockings
(class II) for at least 2 weeks afterwards
What
side effects might I notice?
• Pain or stinging during and after the
injection — this is normal
• Redness, swelling, or firmness along
the treated vein — settles over days
• Brown discolouration of the skin over
treated veins — common; usually fades over 6–12 months but can occasionally be
permanent
• Fine new vessels forming near
treatment sites — known as 'matting'; usually temporary

🚨 SEEK URGENT ATTENTION
IF |
After the procedure, you experience severe leg pain or swelling (possible blood clot), chest pain
or breathlessness (possible PE), vision changes, or signs of stroke. These
are rare but serious and need immediate medical attention. |
After
your procedure — important instructions
• Wear your compression stockings as
instructed — at least 2 weeks
• Walk immediately after the procedure
and keep active
• Avoid prolonged sitting, hot baths,
saunas, and strenuous exercise for 2–3 days
• Avoid sun exposure on treated areas
while they are healing
Frequently
Asked Questions
❓ How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the extent and size of the veins being treated. Spider veins
typically need 2–4 sessions, spaced at least 4–6 weeks apart. Larger varicose
veins may need more. Your doctor will assess the response and plan accordingly.
❓ Will the brown discolouration go away?
Brown discoloration is caused by iron pigment depositing in the treated
tissue. In most people, it fades significantly over 6–12 months. A small number
of patients may have some permanent discolouration. Using the correct
concentration and treating smaller vessels first minimises this risk.
❓ Can varicose veins come back after treatment?
Sclerotherapy permanently destroys the treated veins, but it does not
prevent new ones from forming. Underlying venous insufficiency, genetics,
prolonged standing, obesity, and pregnancy can cause new veins over time.
Compression stockings, a healthy weight, and regular exercise help slow
recurrence.
