3. What Is SUMATIX 100mg and What Is It Used
For? |
What Is SUMATIX 100mg?
Sumatix 100mg contains
Sumatriptan, the original and most widely studied triptan, a class of medicines
specifically developed to treat migraine. Sumatriptan works by binding to
serotonin 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors in the blood vessels and nerve endings of
the brain.
This causes constriction of
the dilated cranial blood vessels that contribute to migraine pain, and blocks
the release of pain-causing neuropeptides (CGRP) from trigeminal nerve fibres.
Unlike ordinary pain medicines
such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, Sumatix 100mg (Sumatriptan) targets the
specific neurovascular mechanism of migraine rather than simply masking pain, making
it significantly more effective for established migraine attacks.
What Is It Used For?
Sumatix 100mg is taken at the
onset of a migraine headache to abort the attack, providing relief from the
throbbing, often one-sided headache, nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity
to light and sound that characterise migraine.
Sumatix 100mg works best when
taken as early as possible after the headache phase begins (not during the
aura, if one is present). Sumatriptan is not for prevention of migraines, it is
an acute treatment. Patients with frequent migraines (more than 4 per month)
should discuss preventive therapy (e.g., propranolol, amitriptyline,
topiramate) with their doctor.
In Kenya, migraines are a
common but underdiagnosed and undertreated condition, Sumatix 100mg offers
patients an effective, migraine-specific acute treatment option.

4. How to Take This Medicine |
Dose
100mg as a single dose at the
start of the headache phase of a migraine. Swallow with water.
If No Response
If the first dose does not
work for a particular attack, do not take a second dose for the same attack, it
is unlikely to help. Use a rescue analgesic instead.
If the Migraine Returns
If the migraine initially
responds and then returns, a second 100mg dose may be taken at least 2 hours
after the first dose. Maximum 300mg in 24 hours.
Not During Aura
Do not take Sumatix during the
aura phase, wait until the headache begins.
Not for Prevention
Do not take Sumatix daily for
prevention of migraines, it is only for treating an attack when it starts.
Missed Context
This medicine is used as
needed during migraine attacks, not on a fixed daily schedule.

7. Safety Warnings and Special Precautions |
· CARDIAC
RISK: Sumatriptan constricts blood vessels, do not use in patients with
established cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or significant
cardiac risk factors without cardiological clearance.
· CHEST
SYMPTOMS: The pressure or tightness sensation in the chest that some patients
feel with Sumatriptan is usually a known drug effect, but true cardiac chest
pain cannot be ruled out without medical assessment, seek care for severe or
unusual chest symptoms.
· MEDICATION
OVERUSE HEADACHE: Using Sumatriptan (or any acute migraine treatment) more than
10 days per month leads to a paradoxical worsening of headaches, monitor
frequency of use.
· SEROTONIN
SYNDROME: Combining with SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs can cause serotonin syndrome, a
potentially life-threatening condition.
· DRIVING:
Drowsiness and dizziness, do not drive during an attack or until you know how
the medicine affects you.
|
8. Drug Interactions |
Ergotamine
/ Dihydroergotamine: Do not take within 24 hours, additive
vasospasm risk.
Other
triptans: Do not combine, additive vasospasm.
MAO
inhibitors (MAOIs): CONTRAINDICATED, do not use
within 14 days of stopping an MAOI.
SSRIs
/ SNRIs (fluoxetine, sertraline, venlafaxine): Risk
of serotonin syndrome, use with caution; monitor for symptoms.
Propranolol:
Increases Sumatriptan levels, maximum dose of
Sumatriptan should be observed.

or neurologist following confirmed migraine diagnosis. Available at Pharmily
with a valid prescription.

11. Patient Guidance |
|
💊 Key Points
for Patients: ✔ Take Sumatix 100mg as soon as the
headache phase of your migraine starts, the sooner the better. Do not wait
until the pain is severe. ✔ Do not take it during the aura (the
visual or sensory warning symptoms before the headache), wait for the
headache itself to begin. ✔ If your headache comes back after
initial improvement, you may take a second 100mg dose at least 2 hours after
the first. Maximum 300mg in 24 hours. ✔ Do not take Sumatix more than 10 days
per month, overuse leads to more frequent headaches, not fewer. ✔ Tell your doctor if you experience
significant chest tightness, shortness of breath, or pain, especially if it
is severe. ✔ If you are also taking antidepressants
(SSRIs), inform your doctor before using Sumatix.

12. Pharmacist / Prescriber Notes |
Sumatix 100mg (Sumatriptan) is
a first-generation triptan, effective and well-studied for acute migraine.
Cardiovascular screening is essential before dispensing: confirm no history of
MI, angina, stroke, TIA, or uncontrolled hypertension.
The MAOI interaction is
absolute, allow 14 days after stopping any MAOI. Propranolol interaction
increases Sumatriptan plasma levels, if the patient is on propranolol for
migraine prevention, the triptan dose should be at the low end and the
prescriber should be aware. Medication overuse headache (MOH) counselling is
critical at every dispensing, monitor for patients requesting Sumatrix more
than 10 times per month and advise referral for preventive therapy.
The chest sensation/pressure
experienced by some patients on Sumatriptan is usually the known 'triptan
sensation', but genuine cardiac events can occur in predisposed patients. For
patients on SSRIs (serotonin syndrome risk), counsel on warning signs:
agitation, confusion, rapid heart rate, fever, muscle twitching.

13. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) |
What is Sumatix 100mg used for?
A: Sumatix 100mg is used to
treat migraine attacks, specifically the throbbing headache, nausea, and
light/sound sensitivity of an established migraine. It works best when taken
early in the headache phase.
Can I take Sumatix at the first sign of a migraine?
A: Yes, but wait until the
headache phase begins. If you have an aura (visual disturbances, tingling)
before the headache, wait for the headache to start before taking Sumatix.
Taking it during the aura phase is less effective and not recommended.
I feel pressure in my chest after taking Sumatriptan, should I be
worried?
A: A sensation of tightness,
pressure, or warmth in the chest is a known and common effect of Sumatriptan, usually
harmless. However, if the sensation is severe, crushing, or accompanied by pain
down the arm, shortness of breath, or sweating, seek emergency medical
attention immediately.
How many times a month can I take Sumatix?
A: Use Sumatix for a maximum
of 10 days per month. Using it more frequently can cause Medication Overuse
Headache, a paradoxical worsening of headaches caused by too-frequent use of
acute migraine treatments.
Can I take Sumatriptan if I am on antidepressants?
A: Sumatriptan can interact
with SSRIs and SNRIs (antidepressants) to cause a rare but serious condition
called serotonin syndrome. Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all
medicines you take before using Sumatriptan.
