What Is Beecox MR
Tablets and What Is It Used For?
Beecox MR is a triple-combination tablet combining three
distinct analgesic and anti-inflammatory agents to provide comprehensive pain
relief for musculoskeletal conditions:
Celecoxib 200 mg is a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2)
inhibitor that reduces prostaglandin synthesis responsible for pain,
inflammation, and fever, while sparing COX-1 (gastric-protective), thereby
reducing the risk of GI ulceration compared to non-selective NSAIDs.
Paracetamol 325 mg provides additive central and peripheral
analgesic and antipyretic effects, complementing the anti-inflammatory action
of celecoxib.
Chlorzoxazone 250 mg is a centrally acting skeletal muscle
relaxant that acts on the spinal cord and brain stem to reduce muscle spasm,
which is a significant contributor to back pain and musculoskeletal pain
syndromes.
Together, this combination targets three pain pathways
simultaneously: inflammation (celecoxib), nociception (paracetamol), and muscle
spasm (chlorzoxazone), making Beecox MR particularly suited to acute
musculoskeletal pain with a spasm component.

How to Take This
Medicine
General Instructions
Take with food or milk to reduce the risk of stomach
irritation from celecoxib. Swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water.
Avoid taking with alcohol.
Dosage, Adults
One tablet twice daily (every 12 hours) with food. Do not
exceed 2 tablets per day. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest
duration necessary.
Elderly Patients
Initiate with caution. Elderly patients are at higher risk of
NSAID-associated cardiovascular, GI, and renal adverse effects. Start at the
lower end; monitor closely.
Missed Dose
Take the missed dose as soon as remembered. Skip if next dose
is within 6 hours. Do not double up.
Duration of Treatment
Beecox MR is intended for short-term use (7–14 days) for
acute musculoskeletal pain. Long-term use requires specialist supervision due
to celecoxib's cardiovascular risk.

Contraindications
|
⚠ CONTRAINDICATIONS • Known
hypersensitivity to celecoxib, sulfonamides, paracetamol, chlorzoxazone, or
any excipient • History of
NSAID-induced asthma, urticaria, or allergic reactions (aspirin/NSAID triad) • Active
peptic ulcer disease or GI bleeding • Severe
heart failure (NYHA class IV) • Significant
cardiovascular disease (after CABG surgery, celecoxib contraindicated) • Severe
hepatic impairment • Severe renal
impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min) • Third
trimester of pregnancy, risk of premature closure of ductus arteriosus • Breastfeeding |
Safety Warnings and
Special Precautions
•
Despite selective COX-2 inhibition, celecoxib still carries
cardiovascular risk, use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration,
particularly in patients with hypertension, diabetes, or established
cardiovascular disease.
•
Celecoxib contains a sulfonamide moiety, use with caution in
patients with sulfonamide hypersensitivity.
•
Chlorzoxazone causes significant sedation, patients should
not drive, operate machinery, or consume alcohol during treatment.
•
Serious hepatotoxicity with chlorzoxazone has been reported
(hepatocellular necrosis), discontinue immediately if jaundice or abnormal liver
tests occur.
•
Monitor blood pressure in hypertensive patients, NSAIDs
(including COX-2 inhibitors) can elevate BP and antagonise antihypertensive
therapy.
•
Avoid additional paracetamol-containing products during
treatment, risk of unintentional paracetamol overdose and hepatotoxicity.
•
Do not use in pregnancy during the third trimester, celecoxib
may cause premature ductus arteriosus closure and impair fetal renal function.
•
In Kenyan patients on aspirin for cardiovascular protection,
celecoxib does not substitute for low-dose aspirin, continue aspirin if
prescribed.
Drug Interactions
Always inform your pharmacist and prescriber about all
medicines, supplements, and herbal remedies you are currently taking.
Warfarin / anticoagulants: COX-2 inhibitors may
enhance anticoagulant effect, increased bleeding risk; monitor INR
ACE inhibitors / ARBs / diuretics: Reduced antihypertensive
and diuretic effect; increased risk of acute kidney injury
Lithium: COX-2 inhibitors reduce lithium renal
clearance, increased lithium toxicity risk
Fluconazole: Significantly increases celecoxib
plasma levels via CYP2C9 inhibition, may require celecoxib dose reduction
Rifampicin: Induces CYP2C9, reduces celecoxib
levels
Alcohol: Combined with paracetamol and
chlorzoxazone, increased hepatotoxicity and sedation risk
CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, opioids,
antihistamines): Additive CNS depression and sedation with chlorzoxazone
Other NSAIDs / aspirin (> 325 mg): Increased GI toxicity risk,
avoid concurrent use
Other paracetamol-containing products: Risk of paracetamol
overdose and acute liver failure, check all concurrent medications
Storage Instructions
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct
sunlight and moisture. Keep in the original packaging. Keep out of reach of
children. Do not use after the expiry date.
Prescription Status in
Kenya
Beecox MR is a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) in Kenya due
to the celecoxib and chlorzoxazone components. Prescription assessment should
include cardiovascular risk, renal function, and concurrent medications.
Pharmily requires a valid prescription for dispensing.

Notes
Beecox MR exemplifies the fixed-dose combination analgesic
trend in the Kenyan private pharmacy market. Its three-component design offers
practical multi-modal pain relief for musculoskeletal conditions but requires
careful patient selection and counselling due to the distinct risk profiles of
each component.
The most critical dispensing check is unintentional
paracetamol stacking. The 325 mg paracetamol per tablet means a patient taking
two tablets daily receives 650 mg/day from Beecox alone, well within the safe
range, but if they are also taking paracetamol-containing combination cold
remedies, cocodamol, or other combination analgesics, toxicity risk rises.
Counsel explicitly and check the full medication list.
Chlorzoxazone's sedative potential mandates clear driving and
machinery warnings at every dispensing. In Kenyan working adults, this side
effect is a significant compliance and occupational safety issue. The risk of
chlorzoxazone-induced hepatotoxicity, while rare, is important to document, advise
patients to report any yellowness of the eyes immediately.
For patients on celecoxib long-term (osteoarthritis),
periodic assessment of cardiovascular risk, blood pressure, and renal function
is essential.
Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQs)
Can I take Beecox MR with paracetamol tablets
or Panadol?
A: No. Beecox MR already contains 325 mg of paracetamol per
tablet. Taking additional paracetamol products alongside it can lead to a
dangerous overdose, acute liver failure can occur with too much paracetamol.
Check all your medicines with your pharmacist.
Why does Beecox MR make me feel drowsy?
A: Chlorzoxazone, the muscle relaxant in Beecox MR, acts on
the central nervous system and commonly causes drowsiness. Do not drive,
operate heavy machinery, or drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
Is Beecox MR safe if I have a heart condition?
A: Not without medical guidance. The celecoxib component
carries cardiovascular risk (risk of heart attack or stroke), especially with
prolonged use or in patients with existing heart disease or high blood
pressure. Discuss with your cardiologist or doctor before use.
How long can I take Beecox MR for?
A: Beecox MR is recommended for short-term use only, typically
7 to 14 days for acute pain. Prolonged use of celecoxib and chlorzoxazone
carries increasing risks. If your pain is ongoing, see your doctor to discuss
long-term management options.
